Six tables in the back room of an old house, open four evenings a week. Everything on this page is arranged with a person, in the building.

Where the house stands

A guest who plays for an evening, enjoys it and goes to bed is a better outcome for everyone than a guest who plays until the room closes and thinks about it on the bus home. That thinking shaped the room: six tables, closing at two, no credit at any time, no cash machine inside the street door, and a bar that stops serving before the tables do.

Over-18s, every visit

Eighteen is the age and a document is checked at the door each time you come in, including when you are already staying at the hotel. A cédula, a cédula de extranjería or a passport. Nobody under 18 enters the room at any hour, and there has never been a good enough reason to make an exception.

What staff will do, on the spot

  • Hold a limit for you. Name a figure before you sit; it is written down and kept to for the evening. Ask them to suggest one and they will.
  • Tell you the time. Say when you want to be told the time and you will be, without any fuss.
  • Hold your place. Twenty minutes in the patio and the seat is still there. Nobody remarks on it.
  • Keep you out for a while. Say at reception that you do not want to be let in for a number of days and it is written down and followed.
  • Self-exclusion. Agreed and signed at reception, effective the same evening, lifted only by returning to that desk in person. It cannot be lifted by telephone or by email, whoever is asking.

None of this is handled through the website. It is all arranged in conversation, with somebody who can see your face.

Worth noticing in yourself

  • Staying later than you decided to, on more evenings than you decided to.
  • Coming back the following night mainly to recover the previous one.
  • Being imprecise with the people you travelled with about how it went.
  • Thinking about the room while you are somewhere you paid to be.
  • Money meant for the rest of the trip going in, instead of the other way about.

One of these on its own means little. Three together are worth thinking about, and the staff have talked it through with guests before without making an occasion of it.

Training

Everybody who works that floor is briefed before a first shift and again twice a year: how to set and hold a limit, how to deal with someone who has drunk too much, how to take a self-exclusion discreetly, and when to fetch the duty manager instead of handling it alone. The duty manager is in the house every evening the room is open.

How to ask

Say it to whoever is on the floor, or at reception, any time between six in the morning and midnight. You do not need an appointment or a reason, and it is dealt with at the time.

Gaming takes place in a single room of this house. Nothing is staked or paid through this website, and Sierravia Casino holds no online accounts.

An 1890s merchant's casa in the old centre, two courtyards deep. The walls are thick, so the ground floor stays cool without air conditioning.
